Commentary during the pool scene of The Great Game
Benedict: And here is the sublime Andrew Scott-
Mark: Indeed.
Benedict: -revealing himself as the reptilian genius, Moriarty.
Mark: So not just a cheap gay joke, in fact, a supervillain!
Benedict: No, never, exactly, exactly.
Mark: Andrew came in to read for this part and really everybody just fantastically fell for his interpretation.
...
Mark: And we saw, again, a lot of great people but what Andrew brought to it immediately was a kind of playful super intensity. And for all the sort of camp fun of some of these lines which are demanded by Holmes and Moriarty confrontation, there are moments in it which are so scary and his face becomes a sort of lizard like set mask and this real evil just comes through. I think it’s really remarkable.
Benedict: [exasperatedly] Oh, marry him!
Mark: Oh I am. I’m married-
Benedict: Oh, you are going to marry him!
Mark: -married to Andrew. Yeah, that’s a given. That’s fine. Yup, yeah.
Benedict: Okay. Sorry for interrupting.
Benedict: But no he is, and I completely concur with everything Mark just said about him. And it’s extraordinary, there is something deeply unhinged about the level that his physicality stepped into a point where it’s so cold, it’s so reptilian, it is subhuman.
Benedict: The extraordinary thing is, because he’s such an arch-villain, there’s a real attraction to him, but at the same time, it doesn’t diminish Holmes as being his perfect foe. It’s a very good match between the two of them.
Mark: Now you have to marry him.
Benedict: I do, don’t I?
